📶 About Meshtastic & MeshCore
What is Meshtastic? Meshtastic is an open-source project that turns inexpensive LoRa radio modules into a long-range, encrypted, off-grid mesh network. Messages hop from device to device across the network — no mobile signal, Wi-Fi, or internet required. Ideal for events, emergencies, hiking, and amateur radio experimentation. What is MeshCore? MeshCore is an alternative LoRa mesh networking firmware designed for flexibility and performance. While sharing similar hardware to Meshtastic, MeshCore focuses on a lightweight, modular architecture suited to more technical and experimental deployments — making it a complementary platform for GARS members to evaluate alongside Meshtastic. Why Amateur Radio Operators? LoRa mesh networking sits naturally in the amateur radio space — it involves antennas, propagation, frequency coordination, and network topology planning. Licensed operators can experiment with higher power levels and custom antenna designs to extend range significantly. GARS members use both licensed and licence-exempt spectrum for mesh experiments across Guernsey. The Guernsey Mesh Network GARS members have deployed Meshtastic nodes at various points across Guernsey, building a growing island-wide mesh network. The live node map below shows active devices in real time. The island's geography — elevated coastal paths, low-interference environment — makes Guernsey an excellent location for LoRa mesh experimentation.
