Notes for visiting Amateurs ...
AMATEUR
RADIO OPERATION IN GUERNSEY
LICENCES.
United Kingdom amateur licenses are valid in
Guernsey. CEPT amateur licenses are now also
valid in UK and Guernsey. Amateurs from other
countries may obtain information about
reciprocal licensing from OfCom.
ACCOMMODATION.
Intending visitors should ask the Guernsey
Tourist and Accommodation Bureau, St. Peter
Port, Guernsey for their up-to-date tourist
brochure and list of accommodation.
Tel +44(0)1481-723555. They will be happy to
forward information by post. Visiting amateurs
should beware of hotels with TV distribution
systems which are wide open to TVI.
Amateurs have successfully operated from the
following, amongst others:
Camp Sites:
La Bailloterie Camp Site, Vale (Telephone
+44(0)1481-243636).
Fauxquets Valley Camp Site. (Telephone
+44(0)1481-255460).
The Island of Herm, 5km E. of Guernsey, welcomes
amateurs to its camp sites, self-catering
cottages, and hotel (Telephone
+44(0)1481-722377).
RADIO CLUB.
Guernsey Amateur Radio Society membership
includes a majority of the islands' radio
amateurs.
Meetings are held every Friday at 8.00pm at The
Bunker, La Ruette du Frocq, Castel, Guernsey,
and visitors are welcome.
Telephone +44(0)1481-255273. See Our Club
Station link!
Postal address is The Secretary, GARS, P.O. Box
100, Guernsey, Channel Islands, GY1 3EL.
LOCAL FM ACTIVITY.
There is no 2-metre repeater on the island, so
activity centres on the FM calling channel S20
(145.500MHz).
The 70cm repeater GB3GU on RB13 (input 434.925
MHz, output 433.325MHz) is now working.
We do have an Echolink "link" - MB7IGU - on
145.3375MHz. The node number is 262510.
RSGB GB2RS NEWS BROADCAST.
This is read each Sunday at 0930 local time on
145.525MHz (S21), followed by an 'after-news
net' on 145.575MHz (S23)
PACKET ACTIVITY.
There is a DX Cluster, and it can be accessed on
144.900MHz. The call is GB7DXG-1, and the sysop
is Keith GU6EFB.
Other than that, there is little general packet
activity.
QSL CARDS.
Even if alternative routes are specified at the
time of contact, QSLs will be sent to Guernsey
via the RSGB bureau. It is therefore essential
that sufficient self-addressed envelopes
(Guernsey stamps, or cash by arrangement) be
maintained with the RSGB QSL Sub-Manager, Phil
Cooper, GUĂSUP, 1 Clos au Pre, Hougue du Pommier,
Castel.
This service is available to non-members of RSGB,
without charge. Please reply to all cards
received, and thus help maintain Guernseys' high
reputation for QSLing.
Sadly, we have had quite a few visitors over the
past year or so that have not left forwarding
arrangements for QSL cards.
Please understand that we have no control over
this situation, and although the sub-manager
will try to make contact with the call involved,
it is not always possible to arrive at a
satisfactory conclusion.
OPERATING.
To safeguard the interests of future visitors
and of local amateurs, visiting operators are
asked to observe good operating practice, and to
operate within UK licensing terms.
GUERNSEY AMATEUR RADIO
SOCIETY PREMISES AND EQUIPMENT.
We are currently unable to offer the facilities
of our club house to ANY visiting amateurs.
As we are in the process of moving in, we don't
have any antennas installed.
The conditions listed below are currently
withdrawn until we get settled in.
Subject to prior agreement the facilities of the
Guernsey Amateur Radio Society may be made
available to visiting amateurs. Please write to
us well in advance of any planned trips to make
the necessary arrangements.
With regard to using the Guernsey Amateur Radio
Society premises we would like to draw your
attention to the following guide-lines:-
The visitor must use his/her own radio equipment
for any operating whether casual or under
contest conditions. Special arrangements may be
made for emergency use of Guernsey Amateur Radio
Society items of equipment, but only for a short
period.
Guernsey Amateur Radio Society aerials may be
used, subject to the conditions
below.
All individuals or groups who wish to use the
Guernsey Amateur Radio Society premises outside
normal club hours must be registered members at
the Visitors Subscription Rate ruling at the
time of their visit. This subscription should be
received at least one clear month before the
visit.
All visitors equipment must be removed from use
and Guernsey Amateur Radio Society equipment put
back into commission for use on meeting nights
(every Friday) and for any other occasion on
which it might be required during the visiting
amateurs period of operation, unless the visitor
is prepared for club members to make use of the
equipment on such occasions.
The visitor MUST use his own callsign at all
times and not a call of the Guernsey Amateur
Radio Society, unless operating under the
auspices of the Society and/or the direct
supervision of a Society member.
A fee will be levied to cover the costs of
electricity, rent etc.
The premises are not to be used under any
circumstances as sleeping accommodation.
If the visitor wishes to enter a contest then
this should be cleared first to ensure that it
does not clash with an event in which the
Society wishes to participate. Should the
Society be taking part in such an event, then
the visitor will be welcome to take part under
the auspices of the Society.
The Guernsey Amateur Radio Society will accept
no responsibility for any equipment and/or
personal belongings brought onto the premises.
